Temperature Control

Having recently been away and taking a break from the blogosphere, this post is badly overdue. I got sent this debut album '40 Below' by L'ascenseur aka Peter Grant from Switzerland. It is a fine collection of abstract electronics, broken beats, dark vocal pop and deep echoey Dubstep influences.

'Tasty' will appeal to fans of French electro pop artist Colder, with its metronomic beats and spoken word vocal styles. 'Alea' is very nice Dubstep influenced instrumental track (as played by Mary Anne Hobbs) which takes its cues from Shackleton's work. Overall the album is a dark brooding set of abstract electronica that deserves to heard by the greater electronic community out there.

This album is only available direct from the artist himself so if you want to hear more, check out his myspace and send an email to gimmeth AT gmail.com

Another great release that got sent through to ill-ec-tro-nic towers is the new album by Croatian Techno producer Petar Dundov. Dundov has been releasing electronic music since 2000 and has had his ambient productions released on Jeff Mills' Tomorrow label no less. He joined Music Man records in 2002 and since has had a string of releases culminating in 'Escapements' which brings together the two singles 'Oasis' and 'Waterfall', plus new material. 'Oasis' is the particular standout track for me as it manages to be be both minimal and building, yet retain a subtle melody at its heart which transends the track to greatness. The other single 'Waterfall' is a Detroit Techno track in the classic sense with soaring strings and synth lines which really make it fly.

Radioactive Material

Some very special news for all you (Real) Electro fans out there. Radioactive Man has a brand new album! "Growl" is the third offering from Mr Keith Tenniswood following on from his sublime debut "Radioactive Man" and its hard-edged and fast-paced follow up "Booby Trap".

It has been nearly 5 years since the release of "Booby Trap" but Keith has been keeping himself busy with collaborations with of course 'Sir Andrew of the Weatherall' in Two Lone Swordsmen, as well as working with David Holmes, The Aloof plus Red Snapper.

Mr Tenniswood says: “My last album was in 2003, so this album is a collection of everything I’ve been working on the last four/five years. I’ve been so busy with Two Lone Swordsmen stuff and DJing, that I haven’t had the time to put it out, so this is a real culmination of a long period of time for me. I wanted it to be pretty dancefloor, but still the kind of album you can pop on at home and enjoy on headphones. I don’t want to think about it too much – everyone gets so wrapped up in the process, the technology, the equipment, and everything else...but what about the music? People talk more about the programs than they do the music itself. That’s all I hope it will be – no hype, just good music that is as poppy as it is deep. I’ve tried to make the emphasis on actual songs, rather than just banging tracks, I could make those any day of the week. I really hope it sounds a bit aged from my last album, more matured. A build-on from where I last left off and maybe proof that I have learnt something along the way. I hope that it’s still got a lot of soul and growth in it.”

The album certainly is a mature work that utilises all of Keith's production knowledge accrued over the last 7 years of collaborations and solo releases. The album could be said to be aimed for the dancefloor but is also a great home listen. There are no abrasive 160 bpm freakouts that have characterised some of the other Control Tower output, instead the album opens with a Slow, low-slung breakbeat track "Basement Bounce". This then goes straight into classic Radioactive Man territory with "Pieces of Eight" with its minute Electro Pulses and a deep, deep bassline which really caries the track with its melodic structure. Other highlights include Dot Alison's sultry vocals on "Nothing At All", 4/4 Electro House on "Kristiina" and Andrew Weatherall's dark menacing vocals on "Double Dealings", definitely one of the album's standout tracks.

Overall this is classic Radioactive Man and Growl stands up with his best work, being instantly both listenable and danceable. One of the Electronic albums of the year and it's still only February!

The only downside is that it is not due for release until 12th May! Come on guys surely if an album is ready you can go the Radiohead route and release it via the interweb much faster than this.

Tracklisting: Released 12/05/08

01. Basement Business
02. Pieces of Eight
03. Nothing At All featuring DOT ALLISON

While you are waiting for the rest of this release here are a couple of classics from the back catalog. "Uranium" is the seminal release with that baseline which still puts the Dubstep boys to shame. Random Remixes

Two massive remixes here.

Firstly it is (now everyone's favourite) Dubstep producer Burial giving his trademark refix to Bloc Party. This is taken from their 12" Flux

It is textbook Burial with rain samples, 2 step beats, haunting atmospherics, a beguiling melodic hook and snatched vocal samples. This could have easily sat on his album Untrue.

Bloc Party - Where is Home (Burial Remix) // Wichita

Buy the 12" at Juno

Next is a simple Tech-House tune from Dubfire that has been given Matthew Dear's Audion treatment.

This is another classic Audion remix. It reminds me somewhat of his Hot Chip remake with echoey vocal moans and a simple analogue riff. This though is taken up to the next level halfway through the track with a huge 'French Kiss' style slow-mo breakdown and soaring synths that will have you going loopy on the dancefloor. Massive.

Hello Kitty

Kitty-Yo records sent me a whole host of quality material straight outa Berlin.

Monosylabikk is the moniker of Filip Kaniecki, a Polish artist who produces abstract Hip Hop with samples from Polish Jazz records. 'Rocks', his new album is a continuation of this cut-up sound with instrumental tracks fusing filmic soundscapes, snatched vocal samples and chopped beats plus vocal tunes with collaborators Bee and MC Coherent Motion.

The whole album reminds me of 'Private Press' era DJ Shadow. Fans of Shadow and The Avalanches should definitely check this. Highly Recommended.

Monosylabikk - Et // Kitty-Yo

Monosylabikk - It'd End Up On Ladbroke Grove // Kitty-Yo

Rocks is released on the 16th November

'Particles' is the new album from Jens Doring aka E:gum , Jerry Lusion and Hp.stonji. His discography includes releases for labels such as Digital, Skam, Klein and Phantomnoise among others. However it is under the name E.stonji that this electronic solo project is released.

The tracks contained within combine breakbeats with idm structures and ambient grooves to create beguiling abstract Electronica.

Finally some more straight-up dancefloor material from Electro Houser, Plastique De Reve. The Jeux Sans Frontieres EP contains 5 tracks ranging from the Baile Funk bounce of 'Favela Norte' through to the 303 soaked Acid House of 'What's on Your Mind?' and the 2-step / Dubstep riddims of 'Allright'. Quality.

Rib Tickling

Deep, Deeper, Deepest.

This chest crunching new record by Dubfire (aka Ali Shirazinia from Deep Dish) was inspired by a visit to Ibiza Techno mecca and home of all thing dark and minimal, DC10. At over 12 minutes this is a track which builds into a dark trippy soundscape with the ever pervading baseline that on a big system will cause chest cavities to vibrate to the point where you feel your internal organs will fall out.

It is topped off by a rush of white noise after 9 and a half minutes that brings the track to an epic climax that will have people screaming in ecstasy. This a monster.

Balkan Beats

I got sent a rather nice Techno EP all the way from Zagreb. The New Tendencies EP is by Croatian Techno producer Davor O. There are six tracks in the release all displaying Davor's subtle touch for minimal Techno yet with enough ideas to fill several releases by more established minimal labels (Hands up M_nus). The two tracks here clock in at over 10 minutes each but there are plenty of unique sounds to keep you interested. Davor describes two of the tracks thus.. "Moka Bay" is a futuristic beach party, as rays of sunset peek through silicon silhouettes of cybernetic dancers. Eerie bells ride through looped chirps, as cleansing waves of synths bubble between the toes. "Chiq Pearls" gets percussive on your ass, its tight groove tiptoeing through hip-shaking gamelan chimes, insistent bass pulses, and dub effects.

Retro Electro

I've not been feeling many new releases of late so my posts have been few and far between. However I have been sent some good material in the past and it is time for a quick round up. Underneath the mountains of Electro House rubbish, DJ mixes and remixes of remixes that clog up my inbox, occasionally great material shines through.
Architecture of Sound sent me some interesting Electro from the bizarrely monikered Slap [Unmodified]. The Auto [Repeat] EP is five tracks of nice Retro Electro. Nothing groundbreaking but very solid nonetheless.

Slap [unmodified] - Effexor Redux // Architecture of Sound

Slap [unmodified] - Omnipresent (2nd edit) // Architecture of Sound

Check the www.architectureofsound.com for more info.

Next is more Italo goodness from the cleverly titled SeedyR and its offshoot SeedyburnR records (get it?).

Willy Baxter hails from Helsinki and has a deft touch for subtle Italo inspired Electro Disco. Check out his debut release, a split EP with H3lx.

Clear And Present Danger

I just got hold of some excellent new tracks that I had to share with you. First up is a remix of probably one of the most influential electronic tracks ever. "Clear" by Cybotron (Juan Atkins and Richard Davis) is considered to be a proto Electro/Techno classic from 1983. Cobblestone Jazz have stuck closely to the original version with their remix, just adding some trademark Mathew Jonson dark bass action. It's a good update on the original.

Cybotron - Clear (Cobblestone Jazz Remix) // Juno Buy

Next is a great Techno EP sent from Moodgadget Records. The Mission To Mars EP by Isomer Transition contains four quality deep Techno tracks. "Space Maddness" is the standout with a sound really reminiscent of "Baby Kate" by Heartthrob. Check it.

Isomer Transition - Space Maddness // Moodgadget Released August 18th.

Last but by no means least is a brand new track from ill-ec-tro-nic favourites Modeselektor. These guys can do no wrong at the moment. The have a new album "Happy Birthday" out on BPitch Control in September and from the tracks I have heard so far looks set to be one of the electronic albums of the year. One track from the album "Let Your Love Grow" featuring Paul St Hilaire was posted on this very blog last year by RAW. It is a collaboration with Apparat (Under the name Moderat) and was only ever released on an exclusive free CD given away with De:Bug Magazine.

The track I have for you however is very special. It features the vocal stylings of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and is quite exquisite in its depth and beauty. I'm going to have this on constant rotation.

Shapeshifter

Having discovered the funky Detroit stylings of "Munch" by Redshape over at the excellent Little White Earbuds blog, I decided to do some extra investigating into this anonymous masked music maker. However I didn't find out too much. I what I do know is that Redshape hails from Germany and not Detroit. He has had releases on such labels as Delsin, Music Man, Present, Styrax Leaves and Millions of Moments.

I also discovered two live sets available to download and here is one of them. The other is available from the Redshape website Buy Redshape tunes at Juno Download

Redshape - Live @Kozzmozz NYE 2006/2007

There is also a new record to add to my list of tunes of the year so far. The 2000 and One remix of "Low Profile" by Lazy Fat People has a beautiful metallic sound that reminds me of mid Nineties classics such as Red 2, Phylyps Track and the work of Aril Brikha.

Bring On The Darkness

Forget the summer season. Here is more darkness for your lives. RAW and I have taken a hiatus from posting for the last 3 weeks due to our excursion to Sonar in Barcelona in which there was some serious Dubstep electronic action. There will be a full Sonar report coming shortly.

In the meantime we bring new brand new Burial.

This new release continues in the same vain as Burial's amazing debut album, sparse metallic beats with fractured vocal samples. I swear I can hear either Whitney Houston or Maria Carey in this tune. (Answers on a postcard).

O Superwoman

I have been wanting an excuse to post this masterpiece of surreal New Wave - Art Rock since I started this blog. Laurie Anderson is an American performance artist and composer. Her work has incorporated graphics, lighting, sculpture, mime, slides, film, speech, music and many electronics, some of her own design. By 1976, her performances were featured prominently in museums and concert venues across Europe and North America. O Superman was released in 1981 and was a suprise crossover hit, reaching number 2 in the British charts.

I came across this amazing record somewhat a bit late. I hadn't even heard it until 2 years ago when it was played on a John Peel tribute show (It was one of his all-time favourites.) I was instantly mesmerised by the beautiful haunting sounds and vocals.

My excuse for posting it now is that it has been given the remix treatment by M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade for the 5 Years of Get Physical compilation soon to be released. I always new that the sparse electronics would be perfect for a dancefloor re-interpretation and I am not dissapointed. However at just over 5 minutes the remix is shorter than the original. I think this could have worked really well as an epic 12 minute tranced out mix.

Picture Perfect

It has been a long time coming but the debut album "Skechbook" by Echaskech is finally here and it has definitely been worth the wait. Back in August last year I previewed some of the electronic duo's live music and since then they have been honing their sound to create an album of deep electronic soundscapes which are fully fleshed out. The album opener "Cause and Effect" starts off as a mellow Electro number with lush synths and dreamy effects but then a 303 line is dropped in to convert the track into full on acid throbber. It's a bold opening statement and sets up the rest of the album. Echaskech's sound ranges from ambient dreamscapes, through subtle Electronica to Electro and Techno influences. Many of the tracks including "Unsynchronised Swimming" and "A Slow Day" remind me of Snivillisation era Orbital.

The whole album flows together really well and incorporates their different styles and influences without any track feeling out of place. This is no mish mash of odd style clashes like so many electronic albums can be. Echaskech have found their own unique voice and it definitely shimmers.

The Admiration Of Love

After nearly a three year wait "Our Love To Admire" the new album by my Favourite Indie band - Interpol is virtually here. I wish I could share some exclusives from the album but I have only heard the first single "The Heinrich Maneuver" so far, but it certainly has wetted my appetite for the new material. I'm not going to post The Heinrich Maneuver however as it is already all over the interweb. What I can give you though is this beautiful Electro reworking of "Untitled" which I have simply fallen in love with.

It is the work of Datassette a young man also known as Datashat from London who has released material on respected imprints such as Ai Records.

Check out the Datassette and Datashat Myspace pages to hear more tracks from this talented young producer, including great Electro versions of "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush

They Are The Night

Well I've managed to get my hands on the New Chemical Brothers Album 'We Are The Night' and the Verdict? As usual it veers between moments of inspiration which reminds you why you fell in love with their sound (what seems like so many years ago now) and moments of utter dross which begs the question What were you thinking? For example 'The Salmon Dance' feat Fatlip has to be the worst Chems track I have ever heard. Weak comedy Rapping does not a great album track make. However bar the Collaboration with Willy Mason on 'Battle Scars' the rest of the album flows along very nicely. Second track 'We Are The Night' is their sound back to its Psychedelic best. 'All Rights Reversed' feat Klaxons is much better than imagined and is an early highlight. 'Saturate' is an edited version of 'Electronic Battle Weapon 8' which still totally destroys. 'Do it Again' is solid chunky House music and 'Burst Generator' piles on distorted synths to create a mesmerising uplifting piece of Techno (This will sound amazing live). Album closer 'The Pills Won't Help You Now' feat Midlake starts as melancholic ballad on the come down after the big ride but stills manages to sound uplifting by the end and makes you feel that yes everything will be alright.

So give this album a chance and you will be rewarded. It's a grower that takes a few listens but after it all you will be imagining how good these tracks will sound in their live show. Which begs the question when are you going to release that live album which will blow everyone away?

Introducing The 100th Mega Post

Photos PYMCA

Whooo hoo!

It's another celebration here at ill-ec-tro-nic as we have reached our one hundredth post. There are no brand new exclusives to give you at the moment so I shall be sharing some current tracks that are currently rocking my world.

Beck - Cell Phone's Dead (Villalobos Entlebuch Remix) // The Information Deluxe, Remixes

One by one he'll knock you out. I said a few months back that I thought that Ricardo Villalobos was overrated. I still stand by that remark but he is slowly winning me over with his superb remixes. Depeche Mode's Sinner In Me, Shackleton's Blood On My Hands and this bomb from Beck have all been huge. Villalobos' sound is to use repetition to such an extent that you get totally tranced out and lost in the mix. And how it works. This beck remix with it's eery moans certainly does that to me.

Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill (Ripperton Dub) // Unreleased

Thom Yorke's The Eraser was one of my favourite albums of last year. There have been some great remixes floating about of which this is one of the best. Ripperton turns Harrowdown Hill into a Minimal Techno stormer. If anyone has a copy I'd love to hear the the vocal version.

Round Four - Find A Way (Vocal and Version) // Main Street 1998

Round Three - Acting Crazy // Main Street 1995

Some classic deep dubby House music from Basic Channel. I've been totally getting into this sound at the moment and the sweet Reggae vocals of Paul St Hilaire make these two tracks really shine. You can still get them as part of the Round One to Round Five 1993 - 1999 CD compilation available at Juno and Beatport

Sebo K & Metro - Transit (Original Mix) // Get Physical Buy

Here is a nice slice of Electro House with soaring synth lines and uplifting strings which should do some damage if slipped into a set at the right time. Sebo K hails from Berlin and is part of the Mobilee crew with Anja Schneider

And finally here is a classic from Two Lone Swordsmen aka Keith Tenniswood and Andrew Weatherall (He attended the PYMCA 20 years of rave exhibition don't you know). Rico's Helly is from their second album The Fifth Mission (Return To The Flightpath Estate) from 1996 on their Emissions Audio Output Label and is my favourite TLS track. It's scattershot beats and live double bass bassline are to die for and create a moody masterpiece. You can finally get hold of this on a new compilation of their pre Warp material entitled Emissions From The Archive on the Rotters Golf Club label. Enjoy.

The Worm Has Turned

There's been a lot of talk in recent months about techno and dubstep getting ever closer and Villalobos' remix of Shackleton's Blood on my Hands has been one of the most hyped records of the year.

It finally got released this week and weighs in at 18 minutes of extremely dark minimalism.

It's out on the prolific Skull Disco label who have had a number of critically acclaimed releases which have now been collated onto a double pack CD also out this week.

Jazz Noodles

Just a quick post to tell you about some new material by Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) and Steve Reid. Tongues is the new album by the pair and while improvised, off-kilter, avant-garde Jazz noodling is not my usual bag, this track sounds rather interesting and I'm sure someone out there will like it (although I'm not quite sure who... or why).

Breakfast Time!

I avoided the over confident approach of posting this track during our 'Birthday Bombs' series despite the fact that the two previous Soliton Research tracks I posted did technically qualify as 'exclusive releases'.

This latest ditty is something I've knocked up recently and as usual I'll just leave you a link to the track and let you make your own mind up about it.

I've also entered it into a competition to try and win some free studio time - you can check that out here. Would love to know what you think (good or bad) so comments here or via the comp would be greatly appreciated.

Nanorhythm - Continental Breakfast

P.S. Anyone who has already heard this track, this is a slightly different version that was only completed today.

EDIT: Thanks to the guys who made the comments and for the positive feedback - much appreciated :-)

I had to temporarily change the hosting of this track as we broke March's bandwidth allowance at Soliton Research. Not sure where the comments disappeared to after the re-post?!
