Balkan Beats

I got sent a rather nice Techno EP all the way from Zagreb. The New Tendencies EP is by Croatian Techno producer Davor O. There are six tracks in the release all displaying Davor's subtle touch for minimal Techno yet with enough ideas to fill several releases by more established minimal labels (Hands up M_nus). The two tracks here clock in at over 10 minutes each but there are plenty of unique sounds to keep you interested. Davor describes two of the tracks thus.. "Moka Bay" is a futuristic beach party, as rays of sunset peek through silicon silhouettes of cybernetic dancers. Eerie bells ride through looped chirps, as cleansing waves of synths bubble between the toes. "Chiq Pearls" gets percussive on your ass, its tight groove tiptoeing through hip-shaking gamelan chimes, insistent bass pulses, and dub effects.

Weegie Wonders

OK, seeing as we're now on a roll with this electro malarkey it seems fitting to dig out two gems I've been meaning to post for some time. Both are from a Glaswegian producer called Redshift who released four quality EPs around the turn of the century and sadly appears to have packed his production gear away since. The EPs came out on his own label, Surface Effect, and I suspect the only way of getting hold of these now is keeping an eye out for them in second hand shops or stealing them from people's collections. Redshift's only other vinyl appearance was on the excellent Stuff Records first EP & speaking of which, this label's fifth release is out this week and if the samples I've heard are anything to go by it's gonna be an absolute belter! It's from new boy Rustie and Boomkat has heaped its praise on it too so it's a fair bet that the measly 400 copies doing the rounds ain't gonna be here for long!

Redshift - Glide // Surface Effect
Redshift - Starbase // Surface Effect

P.S. If anyone out there knows where Redshift is hiding, kindly point him back in the direction of his studio!

Retro Electro

I've not been feeling many new releases of late so my posts have been few and far between. However I have been sent some good material in the past and it is time for a quick round up. Underneath the mountains of Electro House rubbish, DJ mixes and remixes of remixes that clog up my inbox, occasionally great material shines through.
Architecture of Sound sent me some interesting Electro from the bizarrely monikered Slap [Unmodified]. The Auto [Repeat] EP is five tracks of nice Retro Electro. Nothing groundbreaking but very solid nonetheless.

Slap [unmodified] - Effexor Redux // Architecture of Sound

Slap [unmodified] - Omnipresent (2nd edit) // Architecture of Sound

Check the www.architectureofsound.com for more info.

Next is more Italo goodness from the cleverly titled SeedyR and its offshoot SeedyburnR records (get it?).

Willy Baxter hails from Helsinki and has a deft touch for subtle Italo inspired Electro Disco. Check out his debut release, a split EP with H3lx.

Willy Baxter - Aiming High // SeedyburnR

H3lx - Supersmashingbrilliant (Willy Baxter Remix) // SeedyburnR
